99.97% at 0.3 microns — and why that number is the hard case

A genuine HEPA filter is defined by a single test: it captures at least 99.97% of particles at 0.3 microns in diameter. That size isn't picked because it's the smallest — it's picked because it's the hardest. Particles around 0.3 microns are the 'most penetrating particle size': too small to be caught reliably by simple interception, too large to be swept up by the random motion that traps the tiniest particles. A filter that nails the worst case does even better on everything above and below it — pollen, dust, pet dander, much of the soot from traffic.

That's the standard worth holding a purifier to. The catch is that the filter is only half the machine. A perfect HEPA medium does nothing if room air can slip past its edges or if the fan can't move enough of your room through it. Which is why sizing — not the HEPA label alone — is what separates a purifier that works from one that just hums.

CADR, ACH, and the maths a box won't show you

Two acronyms decide whether a purifier fits your room. Learn them once and the marketing stops mattering.

CADR — Clean Air Delivery Rate

CADR combines how much air the unit moves with how well it cleans, giving a single number for how fast it delivers filtered air (often quoted for smoke, dust, and pollen separately). Higher CADR clears a given room faster. The trap on the box is the headline 'covers up to X square feet' figure — manufacturers often calculate that against just one or two air changes per hour, which is too slow to keep up with a real source like an open window onto traffic.

ACH — Air Changes Per Hour

ACH is how many times the purifier processes the room's entire volume of air in an hour. For general freshening, around 3 ACH is a floor; for allergies, smoke, or a home near heavy traffic, aim for 4–6 ACH. To hit that, size the CADR to your room's volume, not just its footprint — and remember volume includes ceiling height. A room with 12-ft ceilings holds 50% more air than the same floor plan at 8 ft, and needs roughly 50% more CADR to reach the same ACH.

The honest sizing rule

There's a quick shortcut worth knowing: AHAM's '2/3 rule' says multiply your room's floor area in square feet by two-thirds to get the minimum smoke CADR for roughly five air changes an hour — but it assumes an 8-foot ceiling, so add about 10% more CADR for every foot above that (a 12-foot loft needs close to 50% more). The full method is the same idea with the maths shown: pick the ACH you want (4–5 for most city homes, 5–6 for allergies, smoke, or heavy traffic), work out your room's actual volume, and use Required CADR = (volume × ACH) ÷ 60. Then choose a unit whose CADR clears that at a noise level you'll actually tolerate overnight. A slightly oversized unit run on low is quieter and clears faster than a just-big-enough one run on high.

'True HEPA' versus 'HEPA-type', and why the seal matters

Two units can both say HEPA on the front and perform completely differently. True HEPA meets the 99.97%-at-0.3-microns test. 'HEPA-type', 'HEPA-like', or 'HEPA-style' are marketing phrases for a filter that resembles HEPA but isn't held to that standard — it may capture far less, especially of the fine particulate you most want gone. Read for the actual figure, not the word.

Just as important is whether the machine is a sealed system. If air can leak around the filter through gaps in the housing, even a flawless HEPA element only treats part of the airflow. A well-built unit forces all the fan's air through the filter — that's what 'sealed HEPA' means. In a small, dusty city flat, a sealed true-HEPA unit at a modest CADR will beat a leaky 'HEPA-type' unit with an impressive number on the box every time.

How to size and choose a purifier for a small home

Walk it in this order and you'll skip the two most common mistakes — buying on footprint alone, and buying on the HEPA word alone.

Measure the room's volume, not just its floor

Multiply floor area by ceiling height. A 150-sq-ft bedroom with an 8-ft ceiling is 1,200 cubic feet; the same room with a 12-ft loft ceiling is 1,800. Your purifier has to clear the larger number, several times an hour.

Pick your target ACH

Three air changes per hour is the floor for general use; choose 4–6 if anyone has allergies or asthma, if you're near heavy traffic, or if you cook a lot in an open-plan space. Higher ACH means the air recovers faster after a window is opened or a pan smokes.

Match CADR to volume × ACH

Choose a unit whose CADR can deliver your target air changes for your room's actual volume — and ignore the 'covers up to X sq ft' headline, which usually assumes a slower 1–2 ACH. When in doubt, size up and run it on a lower, quieter speed.

Confirm it's true, sealed HEPA

Look for the explicit 99.97%-at-0.3-microns claim and a sealed-system design, not 'HEPA-type'. A pre-filter for large dust and hair extends the HEPA filter's life; an activated-carbon stage helps with odours and some VOCs but doesn't replace ventilation.

Place it for airflow, not for looks

Put the unit where air can circulate freely — not tucked behind a sofa, under a shelf, or jammed in a corner that starves the intake. In a bedroom, near where you sleep but with clear space around the inlet and outlet. Keep it a step away from the wall.

Plan the filter-change budget up front

HEPA elements load up and lose airflow over months; a clogged filter quietly drops your real CADR. Note the replacement interval and cost before you buy — a cheap unit with pricey, frequent filters can cost more over a year than a dearer one with affordable refills.

01Is one purifier enough for a whole flat?

Usually not — purifiers clean the room they're in, and air doesn't move freely between closed rooms. The practical city-home approach is to size one good unit for the room you spend the most continuous time in (typically the bedroom) and move it, or add a second small one, for the living space. A single unit dragged between rooms only cleans wherever it currently sits.

02Does running it on the highest speed clean faster?

It clears the air faster, yes, but most people can't tolerate the noise overnight, so the unit ends up off or on a low setting that's undersized for the room. That's exactly why sizing up helps: a larger unit hits your target air changes on a quieter medium speed, so it actually stays running. Clean air you'll leave on beats powerful air you switch off.

03Do I need the carbon filter and the UV/ioniser extras?

The activated-carbon stage is genuinely useful for cooking smells and some VOCs, though it saturates and needs replacing. Ionisers and some UV add-ons are far less clear-cut and a few ionisers can produce trace ozone — not what you want in a small sealed room. The core job is done by sealed true-HEPA plus a pre-filter; treat the rest as optional, not the reason to buy.

04Will a purifier fix a damp or musty flat?

Only the symptoms, not the cause. A HEPA unit captures mould spores already in the air, but it does nothing about the moisture growing the mould in the first place. More than the sticker price suggests, and it's worth pricing the whole picture before you buy. There's the electricity of running it more or less continuously, plus replacement HEPA elements that load up over months and quietly drop your real CADR as they clog — a cheap unit with pricey, frequent filters can cost more across a year than a dearer one with affordable refills. 06Is a HEPA purifier worth it if I'm not allergic and live away from traffic?

It's a smaller win, and that's an honest answer. The clearest benefits go to homes near heavy traffic, with smokers, pets, or anyone with asthma or allergies, where the fine-particulate load is genuinely higher.
