Setting Ambulance Par Levels for Busy Urban Routes

On a busy downtown shift, an ambulance restocks between calls or it runs dry by mid-shift. The difference between a rig that’s always ready and one that gets caught short isn’t luck — it’s par levels and the discipline to hold them.

A par level is simply the quantity of each item the rig should carry at shift start, set high enough to absorb your busiest realistic run of calls without a restock. Set it too low to save space and you’ll run out of trauma dressings on the one shift you needed them; set it sensibly and you have a buffer that matches your call volume.

Build pars for the categories that move fastest on an urban rig: bleeding control and trauma, airway, and PPE. Those are the consumables a high-volume shift burns through. A fast between-call check against the par list — thirty seconds, not a full inventory — catches the gaps before the next call.

Restock from the station to par at shift start, and the rig begins every shift identical. We tie par-level discipline into the broader urban EMS kit in our urban EMS response equipment guide, because standardized pars across a fleet mean any crew can trust any truck.

Set the pars to your real call volume, check fast and often, and the rig is ready for the next call instead of recovering from the last one.
